Learn New Zealand Wine for Free — Taste It With Us

New Zealand Wine’s official Discovery Course will take you through the country in about an hour — free, with a multiple-choice exam and a certificate at the end. Here’s how to start, and the bottles to open while you learn.

Some of the best wine education money can buy doesn’t cost a thing. The New Zealand Wine Discovery Course — the official course from New Zealand Wine, the country’s national body — is free, self-taught, and ends in a multiple-choice exam and a Certificate of Completion. It takes around an hour.

This isn’t a marketing microsite or a hobbyist blog. It’s the organisation that represents every New Zealand producer abroad, teaching you directly from the source — the most accurate, up-to-date picture of the country you’ll find anywhere, in downloadable modules you can work through at your own pace, with a fuller New Zealand Wine Textbook if you want to go deeper.

From curious to certified

The course covers the essentials: how New Zealand’s cool, maritime climate shapes its wines, the regions from Marlborough to Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay, and the varieties that made its name — world-defining Sauvignon Blanc, elegant Pinot Noir, and increasingly serious Chardonnay and Syrah. The exam is multiple-choice, and there’s no tasting component — but the course suggests wines to try, which is where your cellar comes in.

The wines to taste as you learn

The course suggests wines to taste alongside each section — and reading about a zesty Marlborough Sauvignon or a silky Pinot only gets you so far until the glass is in front of you. So we’ve lined up our New Zealand range, region by region, to taste as you work through the modules.
